While the onslaught of these police involved shootings continue, so does the hurt, the pain, the tears, the marches, the outcries for justice and the fear. It sometimes seems that words cannot say enough to speak to the broken mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, aunts and uncles, cousins and friends, communities, yes...the people cry out. A cry for justice has swept to and fro across our nation. People from all walks of life and colors and ethnic backgrounds have joined in, in support of the victims, the lives that have been lost. People have thought of every which way to show their love and support, calling out foul on injustice, Many hashtags evolved out of it all, but the one that stuck was #blacklivesmatter, which is now more than a hashtag. It's a movement with Beyonce donating 1 million dollars to the cause.
Throughout this time I watched and cried and prayed for the families and for an end to the injustice. I participated in a march in Virginia for Trayvon Martin, but no, that wasn't enough. So as a designer of things, especially my earrings for Salon Exotica Via L.S. I came up with a *Warriors of Justice* Collection and from there I created the *Warriors of Justice* Ribbon.
I chose the colors black and gold. The color Black is representative of many things. It is associated with power and justice as we see that judges wear the color black. It is also associated with death, evil and fear. It also symbolizes strength, seriousness and elegance. The color gold symbolizes value, illumination, love, compassion, courage and wisdom. I felt that these colors had the ability to speak to this systemic injustice without saying a word. Just as the pink ribbon speaks for cancer awareness.
I chose black suede as the material to be used because of it's value and then I coated the tips with gold glitter and then resin coated the tips to preserve the glitter. As i made these Warriors of Justice Ribbons, I thought about Trayvon Martin and all the others. When I was done I sent a few of these ribbons to the attorney for the families, though I never heard back from them.
Being that I made a few of them, I'd like for you to have one while supplies last. I give it to you free. All I ask is that you pay shipping and handling.
